Conservationists urge CITES to reject proposed ivory sales

An article in the 12 March 2010 issue of Science journal by 27 eminent elephant conservationists warns of the grave danger posed to elephant populations throughout Africa should the proposed sales of ivory be approved.

The selling countries are required to demonstrate that their elephant populations are secure, that law enforcement is effective and that the ivory sales will not be detrimental to elephants.  But both the proposed selling and the buying countries have inadequate controls in place to safeguard elephants from the illegal trade in ivory, say the conservationists.
