Another Hong Kong Ivory Seizure

Hard on the heels of a massive 6 tonne seizure in Malaysia last month, 1.3 tonnes in November and 3.8 tonnes in October (both in Hong Kong) yet another large ivory seizure has just taken place.

This time, customs officials in Hong Kong X-rayed a container which was shipped from Kenya and transited through Malaysia, finding 779 pieces of ivory weighing more than 1.3 tonnes buried in crates hidden underneath rocks.

The next Conference of the Parties to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), where issues vitally important to the conservation of elephants will be discussed by governments, begins two months from now.

This latest seizure brings the tally of large seizures alone to over 12 tonnes in 12 weeks. Will the world take on board the implications of the poaching epidemic behind these seizures and work to strengthen protection for elephants?
