An article in the 12 March 2010 issue of Science journal by 27 eminent elephant conservationists warns of the grave danger posed to elephant populations throughout Africa should the proposed sales of ivory be approved.

An international team of 27 conservationists, writing in the March 12 edition of Science, says allowing the proposed sale of stockpiled ivory by Zambia and Tanzania could lead to increased slaughter of elephants for their ivory throughout Africa.

Born Free has just heard that the IUCN1 Red List status for the African Elephant has been corrected from 'Near Threatened' to 'Vulnerable' as of midnight 10 March 2010.  Other corrections made are to the status of the Central African sub-population, now 'Endangered' (previously 'Data Deficient') and that of West Africa now 'Vulnerable' (previously 'Near Threatened').

Breaking news 25/02/10…Thai customs officials have seized two tonnes of elephant tusks hidden in pallets in Bangkok yesterday. Further evidence that the prospect of additional legal trade in ivory is fuelling an increase in illegal trafficking.

In Cameroon, Central Africa, elephants are in crisis. Criminal gangs of poachers are reported to be increasingly targeting elephants within National Parks and other protected areas. Dja National Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site and important haven for forest elephants, is just one of those vulnerable areas now being targeted.
