Vietnam Seizes Another 2 tonnes of Ivory

According to media reports, customs officials at the northern Hai Phong port in Vietnam have just announced another massive seizure of ivory.

According to TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring network, 2,194kg of elephant tusks cut into 985 pieces were discovered on 29th April hidden in two shipping containers among a consignment of dry seaweed.  The illegal shipment was on its way to China from Kenya, but the origin of the tusks is as yet unconfirmed.

Last year, officials at the same port seized more than 6.2 tonnes in March and a further 200kg in July.

This case brings the total amount of ivory reportedly seized so far this year to over 6 tonnes and further highlights the ongoing illegal trade in ivory stimulated by demand from the Far East and threatening elephant populations throughout their range.
